One of the most frequent questions our Jacksonville team receives is: "How do I know which dumpster size I need?" It's a great question, and getting it right can save you significant money. Too small and you're paying for a second container or overage tonnage charges. Too large and you've paid for capacity you don't need.
At Jacksonville Big Dumpster Rental, we've delivered over 2,500 containers across Duval County and surrounding areas. Over 15 years, we've developed a reliable sizing methodology based on real project data. Here's everything you need to make the right decision.
Understanding Cubic Yards
Dumpster capacity is measured in cubic yards — a unit of volume equal to 3 feet × 3 feet × 3 feet (27 cubic feet). A standard pickup truck bed holds roughly 2–3 cubic yards of debris. Keeping this in mind helps you estimate how much waste your project will generate.
The 5 Container Sizes We Offer
10-Yard Dumpster — Small Projects
Dimensions: approximately 12 feet long × 7.5 feet wide × 3.5 feet high. The 10-yard is ideal for small, contained projects where you're clearing a specific area. Best uses include:
- Single-room cleanouts (attic, basement, one garage bay)
- Small bathroom demolition
- Minor landscaping debris (leaves, small shrub removal)
- Replacing a small section of flooring
- Apartment or condo cleanouts
Weight limit: typically 2–3 tons. Not recommended for heavy materials like concrete or tile.
15-Yard Dumpster — Medium Residential Projects
Dimensions: approximately 14 feet long × 7.5 feet wide × 4.5 feet high. A solid middle-ground for projects that are too big for a 10-yard but don't need the full capacity of a 20. Best for:
- Two-room cleanouts or moderate garage purges
- Small deck removal
- Kitchen cabinet replacement (cabinets only, not full gut)
- Moderate landscaping projects
20-Yard Dumpster — Most Popular for Home Renovations
Dimensions: approximately 22 feet long × 7.5 feet wide × 4.5 feet high. The 20-yard is our most frequently rented container — and for good reason. It handles most single-phase home renovation projects comfortably. Best for:
- Full kitchen or bathroom gut-renovation
- Roof replacement (up to 2,000 sq ft)
- Flooring replacement throughout a home
- Complete garage cleanout including furniture
- Deck demolition (medium-sized)
30-Yard Dumpster — Large Projects
Dimensions: approximately 22 feet long × 7.5 feet wide × 6 feet high. When your project spans multiple rooms or involves mixed debris types, the 30-yard prevents the need for a swap-out mid-project. Best for:
- Multi-room renovation or partial home gut
- Large roof replacement on a commercial building
- Estate cleanouts for large homes
- Major landscaping overhaul
- Retail or office space cleanout
40-Yard Dumpster — Commercial & Construction
Dimensions: approximately 22 feet long × 7.5 feet wide × 8 feet high. The 40-yard is the largest standard roll-off container and is reserved for large-scale commercial, demolition, and new construction applications. Best for:
- New home construction waste
- Commercial building demolition
- Large estate or hoarder cleanouts
- Siding replacement on large structures
Special Consideration: Heavy Materials
If your project involves concrete, brick, dirt, tile, or roofing shingles, the weight of the material matters more than the volume. These materials are extremely dense. A 20-yard container filled with concrete would be dangerously overweight for transport. For heavy debris-only loads, we recommend our 10-yard containers specifically loaded to weight limit — which is usually the most cost-effective approach.
